Rebecca Burton
I am an interdisciplinary artist inspired by the detritus of material culture: incidental the shapes made by road markings, prehistoric architectural monuments, records of the material presence of people, records of our planet’s history in deep time. I try to access a sense of what has gone before through touch, seeing and exploring through making. I make paintings with beeswax, mineral spirits and pigment and oil paints in many many layers which produces a rich and complex surface. I make marks by removing paint to reveal layers beneath as well as applying. I also make prints in layers using a gelliplate which is a sheet of mineral gellatin and woven pieces.
